Gavriil A. Ilizarov was sent in the 1950’s to Syberia as a general practitioner, after graduating from the Medical Faculty, while he developed his own system, consisting of rings. Thereafter Dr. Ilizarov completed his residency in Orthopaedic surgery and his external fixator system, found a frequent application in the Soviet Union.
