He was born in February 27th 1950 in Caycuma of Zonguldak. He is graduated from Istanbul School of Medicine in 1973. In 1978 he became an orthopaedic surgeon. He continued his work as specialist at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology in the same clinic. He became Associate Professor in 1985 and Professor in March 3rd 1992. Since 1984 he is interested in limb lengthening and deformity correction with Ilizarov technique.
  
In 1993 he has worked at the Ilizarov Institute in Kurgan of Russia. He participated in a few national courses about Ilizarov technique as lecturer and directed panel discussions about external fixators in national congress.

Professor Cakmak has published more than 30 international and national works about Ilizarov surgery.
